Purchased this little group last week from a family member, items belonged to his father who according to him landed in Normandy fighting through Europe. The compass is 1941 dated, most of its black finish intact, dial swivels and there is an air bubble to the inside. One period cigar box, found inside are a number of wartime coins mainly from Holland , also a couple of Belgium examples. Five wartime occupation notes, two German, one Dutch, one French and one Belgium. Three tokens one being a Saint Christopher charm. A leather coin pocket wallet. One boxed mini compass in its period tin box. A photo of the soldier wearing a 22 pattern tunic and sergeant stripes. The last item found in the box is a hand written poem titled ''The nightmare memory of the Frankenstein of Europe, Adolf Hitler'', one i have not come across before. Lastly there is an old RA embroidered handkerchief and a period pocket knife. During the purchase the family related that there father landed in Normandy, there is no name found amongst the group but when i inquired they said i he was called ''Eric Box'', they did not remember his regiment but stated he was not in the RA? I have added to the group the 3 postwar ration books found with the group , apparently the vets home address even though none have a ''Box'' Surname. So we do have a good 41 dated compass with what looks like the type of items the soldier would have in his pockets at the time and going by the different coins and notes he did go through France, Belgium, Holland and Germany, perhaps research may be possible.
